Civics 101

The Miami-Dade School District proposed to take 20 percent of the proceeds of all bake-sales, car washes and the like undertaken by school groups such as the marching band and math club. "But facing heat from outraged parents," the Herald reports, "Superintendent Alberto Carvalho backed off the plan . . . , which would have put about $5 million into the district account." Wow, that's a lot of Krispy Kreme Donuts. Wow, that's a lot of chutzpah.

The only thing that would have helped kids more fully understand how their current government works is if the proposal had been that they would tax the most successful bake sales at a higher rate and that all the money taken from the students who raised it was going to go to students who didn't participate in any activities and who were mostly failing.

Oh, I don't know, I think it's worth 20% to defend the homeland against those kids from Ronald Reagan High.

Macon, that was after our time, but apparently students from Doral now attend Ronald Reagan High.

And then, of course, there were the Tree People, who attended Miami Springs high.
